Review: Succubus in the City by Nina Harper

Succubus in the City is the first book in a paranormal chick lit series by Nina Harper.

Lily is a succubus, a demon who delivers evil men to hell through sex. She lives in New York, works a fabulous job for a fashion magazine and spends her days with her girlfriends, all also demons. In this world, Satan is a woman, and the demons are blessed with perfect looks, money and the ability to eat whatever they want without gaining an ounce. There is a catch in Lily’s contract with Satan – she can be freed from her role as succubus if a man loves her. When she meets P.I. Nathan Coleman, she begins to think that he could be her delivery from boredom with her life.

This book is an easy enough read, with Harper’s prose and imagination carrying the story well. The endless dropping of brand names can be wearying, though it’s unlikely to be an issue for anyone used to reading chick lit (or fans of the T.V. show Sex and the City, from whom this book is clearly trying to draw readership).

The major problem with this book is the ending – or lack thereof. None of the major story threads are resolved at all in this book, which is likely to make it a very disappointing read unless the reader has the second book waiting.

Succubus in the City is published by Piatkus.
